2022 countries make final plea

The five countries campaigning to win the 2022 World Cup made their final pledge to host the event on Wednesday afternoon.

Australia, Qatar, Japan, South Korea and the USA had some famous faces out in force for the presentations that can make such a big difference to the final vote. Former president Bill Clinton was supporting the USA bid whilst retired World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane was on hand to back the Qatari campaign.

In particular, Qatar’s bid has prompted mass interest with their plans to counter the raging climate and the range of new stadiums in the making. Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned, the wife of the Qatari ruler, said: “From Doha to Damascus, the hope for a generation of youth will be shown not to be an elusive dream.”

The USA bid pledged to make FIFA record profits from the tournament. Former president Bill Clinton, footballer Landon Donavon and actor Morgan Freeman were on hand to add their input. Donavon said: “Over 100 million watched this year’s World Cup back home, which is indicative of how far we have come as a footballing nation,” he said. The World Cup captivated our country and something special happened this summer in our love for the game.”

The Australian, Japanese and South Korean presentations were slightly lower key. Model Elle Macpherson spoke alongside the chairman of Australian football in an attempt to win voters over like Claudia Schiffer did for Germany in 2006. Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-Sung spoke on behalf of the South Korean bid whilst Japan promised more than 400 large 3D screens for supporters to watch matches on if they win the bid.
