Australia to bid for 2018 World Cup?

Although the result of the winner to host the World Cup 2018 won’t be decided until 2011, the competition is hotting up between countries from different continents. A country that will put its name in the pot of candidates is Australia. Even if they are not chosen, they stand to be admired for the determination they are showing to host the tournament. Australian Sport minister Justin Madden was quoted saying: “Where else would they put it but Australia?”

Australian World Cup Hosts Bid

It is surely an interesting proposal for FIFA to take this tournament to the Asia-Pacific continent. It will help this continent to start building a strong football base locally, that can compete with the big names that always crop up in football.

Australia 2018 World Cup Bid

The football federation of Australia is studying in detail whether the Australian facilities meet the FIFA requirements to host the big competition, and if there are enough time and funds to build new infrastructure. FIFA is not opposing the bid from Australia, but is encouraging it. The head of the football federation of Australia (FFA) stated that he believes that his country’s bid has a chance of being successful, and is not at all inferior to the other bids coming from countries such as England, Russia, China or USA.

The coach and players’ focus should be on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and performing well. This would back up the bid to host the 2018 World Cup, and who knows, we may have a kangaroo as the mascot for the 2018 tournament!

of course, australia should host the cup. it’s the best place in the world. We have the the 7th biggest stadium in the world. the MCG. it’s is 102,000 maximum, compared to Wembley’s cheap 90,000. We have stadiums in Melbourne: MCG 102,000, Telstra Dome 57,000, Melbourne Rectangular Stadium (under construction) 31,000 and can be expanded to 50,000, Skilled Stadium 28,000 (1 hour from Melbourne CBD), and other small oval stadiums around 20,000. Sydney: ANZ Stadium 84,000, Sydney Football Stadium 44,000, SCG 52,000 (under small construction) Central Coast Stadium 22,000 (90 mins from Sydney CBD) and other small oval stadiums around 20,000. Adelaide: AAMI Stadium 52,000, Bonython Stadium 45,000 (not being built yet), Hindmarsh Stadium 18,000. Perth: Subiaco Oval 45,000, Members Equity Stadium 21,000, New Stadium (un named and to be ready befor 2018 WC) 60,000. Brisbane/Gold Coast: Suncorp Stadium 53,000, The Gabba 44,000, Skilled Park 25,000. Tasmania: Aurora Stadium 23,000. All stadiums are world class and are perfect for WC IN AUSTRALIA. ENGLAND GO HOME AND CRY TO UR MUMMIES, COZ AUSTRALIA WILL GET 2018 WORLD CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You’re right Jonnie, we do have a number of venues that can be considered but not sure if we have enough that are 40,000 or more in capacity. That is an FFA requirement. Some of those above can be used for training venues though.
Also, only one city is allowed to host two venues so it could be tough to marry up the requirements.

  3. amy

hi all i love australia aussy ruls

  4. Benno

Jonnie, I’ve been through your little list of Aussie venues and deleted those which are either too small or too old, and reduced the multiple city venues to the correct number… The picture looks a little different…

Melbourne: MCG 102,000, Telstra Dome 57,000*
Sydney: ANZ Stadium 84,000, Sydney Football Stadium 44,000*
*Note – only one of Melbourne OR Sydney can have two venues.
Adelaide: Bonython Stadium 45,000 (if it gets built)
    Perth: New Stadium 60,000.
    Brisbane: Suncorp Stadium 53,000
add Newcastle’s EnergyAustralia Stadium (once the extensions are completed) and that gives you a grand total of 7 (2 of which are yet to break ground), of a required 10. Where else are we (for I too am in Australia) going to construct new football friendly 40-50k stadia – Canberra, Wollongong, Gold Coast, Geelong, Hobart?

Then all we have to worry about is the lack of suitable hotel accomodation around the ‘non tourism’ areas, the poor communications links, and the low population… THEN all we have to do is get over the time zone and distance issues (Sth Korea/Japan conquered these through sheer weight of population)… THEN all we have to do is hope that after we’ve done all this England, the USA, China, Spain, or whoever, don’t manage to put in a bid that goes BEYOND the minimum requirements.

What you guys are missing though, is it is Englands turn!
England gave football to the world and it has been too long since it has held a World Cup(especially considering the likes of Mexico have hosted it twice!)
Wembley is the home of football, and no Cricket, Rugby or Aussie Rules stadium can EVER compete with that I’am afraid guys.
    Go for 2022 though!

  6. Jonny

    mate, our stadiums are crap.
for instance…the seats are way too far from the oval.
no one wanst to be far from the action…
this is what FIFA are considering…different seating.
and what are the AFL gonna do….???
what happens if the AFL season is on dduring the World Cup????
    this is a major problem.
in my opinion, i would NOT go and see a game of soccer that is
too far away. ive see people use binoculares at the footy…
many different cultures will be coming to Australia if the World Cup was held here….they wouldnt be too happy if they had to fly acros the world
and not be able to see the game….that would suck
keep it in europe…unless FFSA can do sumthing about the seating

  7. Jonny

    i have to say jonnie
ur a bit up at urself
    be realistic…maybe 2022…but not 2018
i mean, i would love for it to be here
but…it just isnt the way its gonna be..
i say let Englna dhave it 2018
    and us aussies in 2022,,,,
its only fair, and besides, we need time to build 10 stadiums..
ok ok…the MCG is fkn awesome, but….the seating…way too far away.
it would be like watching ants play…
meh, it aint up to is any way
Sepp Blatter will decide, may the best country get it

  8. Coco

2030 possibly since FIFA will most likely consider Europe in 2018, North America for 2022 (reason why? Japan/Korea 2002), then Europe again for 2026, then Asia region 2030…

reality 2030…and then MAYBE Australia will host it, with a big fat question mark.

  9. jonnie

yeah i hope england gets to host the wc in 2018 coz we havnt go one in ages but i totally agree that australia deserve to host the 2018 world cup and we should wait till 2022. if australia host 2018 then the 2022 world cup will definetly b in europe

  10. Jambo

2022 maybe in Europe but Sepp Blatter is biased against England so Sweden, France or somewhere would get it ahead of us

  11. jason

    2018 England
    2022 USA
    2026 back to europe
    2030 China/Australia most likely China
and by the time im 40 i would give up and figure out that australia wont get it in my liftime

[Australian Sport minister Justin Madden was quoted saying: “Where else would they put it but Australia?”]

Justin Madden was the Victorian (State) Sports Minister and his quote was pertaining to the World Cup final (if Australia was successful) where he stated, “Where else would they put it but in Melbourne (MCG)”…

It will be out of England and Australia, probably splitting the ’18 and ’22 tournaments… China should have no chance as they cant even make the last round of AFC World Cup qualifiers, teams such as UAE and North Korea are ahead of them on the pitch at present…

Blatter is cool to all things England but he knows that UEFA will most probably unite behind their bid, even though other UEFA countries are also contending.

AFC will lobby hard behind Australia, as will OFC (not that they have much weight)… AFC have said they will only back one contender and that will be Australia, our stock has improved greatly in Asia over the past 3 years…

I’d love for Australia to nab 2018 but I think England has the inside running at present

Look at this realistically: all th money, much of the history, and a huge slice of the TV market is in Europe (and africa for the last one) and they’ll have massive pull in the final ballot. Africa and South America are not allowed to bid as the most recent holders, which leaves Asia, Oceania and CONCACAF.

Oceania is a non-starter, so lets turn to CONCACAF. The Americas will have hosted in 2014, certainly ruling out Latin American nations in 2018, and the Carribbean is not going to happen, so that leaves Canada and the USA. Canada has basically no soccer weight at all, so the USA is the only potential host there and its still unlikely because of its ‘recent’ hosting and the probability of Chicago winning the 2016 Olympics. It also fails the TV market test.

So, onto Asia. China have missed out on qualification for 2010, so the liklihood of them hosting is basically zero. Qatar and Australia are the only other bidders, and Qatar meets basically none of the FIFA standards, leaving Australia which does indeed have the best chance outside Europe). Australia is a strong nation within the AFC which is a growing region is the sport, and it has the capacity to host even 2010 if needed. That said, it’d be the third southern hemisphere world cup in a row and it’s a horrible tv market for Europe, and it has strong opposition from Europe. It has a strong chance for an outsider, but it is indeed an outsider. 2022 is a very good possibility, however.

So, Europe. England or Benelux, maybe Spain/Portugal. Any could win really, but England is the most likely. It meets all the requiremnets, although it’d be stronger with Wales and Scotland. Oh well, it’ll still probably win.

    ROUGH percentages, in my guesstimate:

    England 60%
    Benelux 20%
    Australia 15%
    Spain(/Portugal?) 10%
    Others 5%

1- SUNCORP STADIUM- FILL IN THE UPPER TIER CORNERS AND REMOVE CORPORATE BOXES. CAPACITY WOULD INCREASE TO APPROX 58,000 – 60,000

2- GOLD COAST STADIUM – THE ROOF CAN BE REMOVED AND A SECOND TIER ADDED THUS THE CAPACITY INCREASED TO 45,000 MINIMUM

3- BRUCE STADIUM, CANBERRA – CURRENTLY 28,000 CAN EASILY ADD ANOTHER TIER OF SEATING TO INCREASE TO 45,000 MINIMUM

4- SYDNEY OLYMPIC STADIUM – CAN BE CONFIGURED TO INCREASE CAPACITY UP TO 88,000 WITH EXTRA SEATS ADDED IN HERE AND THERE.

5- SYDNEY FOOTBALL STADIUM – ADDITIONAL SEATS ADDED WITH REMOVAL OF CORPORATE BOXES – CAPACITY WOULD INCREASE TO NEARLY 48,000

6- NEWCASTLE TO BUILD SINGLE TIER ON BOTH ENDS AND LOWER SIDE AND POSSIBLY DEMOLISH THE EXISTING WITH NEW STAND ALSO, CAPACITY 45,000 TO 50,000

7- MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND, REMOVE THE CURRENT FENCING FOR AUSTRALIAN RULES, THE FOOTBALL PITCH TOP REMAIN BUT THE SURROUND TURF TO BE REMOVED AND DUG DOWN BY APPROXIMATELY 6FT. TEMPORARY BOWL TO BE LAID WITHIN THE ARENA THUS BRINGING THE FANS CLOSER TO THE PITCH WITH THE FRONT ROWS PERHAPS 2 FT ABOVE PLAYING SURFACE. CAPACITY WOULD INCREASE TO ABOVE 115,000 AND THIS WOULD BE AN AMAZING SITE WITH INCREASE ATMOSPHERE.

8- ADELAIDE STADIUM TO BUILT AT BONYTHON PARK AND TO ACCOMMODATE 48,000 AS PROPOSED.

9- MEMBERS EQUITY STADIUM TO GET A SECOND TIER COMPLETELY AROUND THE GROUND. CAPACITY 50,000

10- CENTRAL COAST STADIUM- INCREASE THE TWO SIDES WITH A SECOND TIER AND THE ONE END BECAUSE OF THE ROAD AT ONE END BUT COULD BE BUILT OVER. CAPACITY 45,000

ALL THIS IS POSSIBLE BUT THE CHANGES TO THE STADIUMS HAVE TO BE REALISTIC AND PLANNED WELL WITHOUT SCRIMPING.

ENGLAND HAS THE BEST STADIUMS IN THE WORLD AND AUSTRALIA IS LACKING QUALITY FOOTBALL GROUNDS.

  15. Fitsum

Australia has launched its bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018/2022. This will be the first ever bid for a major event driven that almost entirely by social media. At the center of Australia’s bid is their own social network, where supporters can sign up and complete actions to demonstrate to world how much they want to host the World Cup.

  16. matt o

England has the backing of a lot of countries already

  17. Andy Hedges

The WC in Australia would no doubt be a very special show but it has a number of negatives when compared to England:

English Stadia are far superior, geared towards football.
Strong football culture which is lacking in Aus.
Lots of hotel rooms in England
The time difference between Aus and Europe.
Traveling around England is an easy affair – Trains, coaches and cars – not planes
    We bloody deserve it!
A WC final at Wembley would be amazing, apart from England obviously wont be playing in it.

Good luck with future bids but 2018 should go to England, however FIFA and UEFA hate us.

    Andy

jonnie mate the gabba can’t host any games because its like you are a kilometre from the action. i maustralian and i believe we have a good chance but places like gabba, scg, waca cannot be put into your list mate

  19. Where would Australia host thier games? | 2018 England

[...] This article is from a comment posted by Spel on Australia to bid for 2018 World Cup? [...]

  20. Ron

I have to agree with Andy regarding England hosting the World cup. They could start the World cup in this country tomorrow, the infrastructure and amenities are already there. The passion is a given. Unfortunately at the high court of football, for various reasons which mystify me, we are the condemned. So good luck to you Australia. I hope you can host it but England can win it!!!

  21. Other potential bids for 2018 | 2018 England

[...] Australia have a lot of world class stadiums at their disposal and a recent history of hosting a successful Rugby World Cup, Olympics and Commonwealth games. Football Australia are yet to comment, but a bid is likely and could be succeed if not in 2018 then for 2022. Read more on an Australian 2018 bid here. [...]

  22. Noofo

Korea/Japan, Germany and South Africa have all had to build numerous new stadiums just to meet the requirements from FIFA. Australia won’t build new stadiums unless cricket and AFL can play on them and so you are only left with the little rectangle stadiums and huge AFL stadiums to watch games at. From what i have read the final stadium is required to be rectangle and seat 80,000. which Aus can’t do (Sydney Olympic is not a rectangle stadium under any set-up). Unless there are a lot of new/upgraded stadiums it would not be worth while.

  23. Richard

On facebook I was able to read hightlights from Englands bid for the 2018 World Cup, I would recommend any Australian soccer fan read this highlighted version, especially what England intend to do with Fan Fest sites. Considering Sydney presently has a Fan Fest site at Darling Harbour/Tumbalong Park for this World Cup. The Fan Fest in question has been a total disaster. apart from when the Socceroos played Australians were’nt interested. The Stadia in Australia except 2 or 3 are not good to watch fooball and in the bid we lead to believe that MCG and SCG are mention, sorry they are cricket grounds. You may have held the Olympics BUT The World Cup IS MUCH MUCH bigger and your infrastucture country wide would not sustain such a large number of fans from overseas.

  24. Richard

Why can’t I read a highlighted version of Australias 2018/2022 World Cup bid. Check out Englands highlighted version as it certainly gives you an insite to what is required to hold a World Cup. very interesting reading for true football(soccer) fans.
