World Cup 2018: City of Birmingham Stadium
Early plans have emerged for a new stadium for Birmingham City Football Club. There were original plans last year involving the building of a super casino in the Nechells area of the city which would be funded by American gaming company ‘Las Vegas Sands’ Those plans were shelved when Manchester was awarded the only super casino licence in the U.K
There is no news so far on how big this stadium could be, but talks are ongoing with Birmingham City Council over the projected building at the Brownfield site. However Brady added at a recent AGM, that environmental issues could be a problem. The club would be looking to invest around £20 million in the project with other money coming from elsewhere, most likely the council.
It is envisaged that if the stadium was given the go ahead it would be completed by 2014.A decision on the proposals is expected within 12 months. Clive Dutton from the council is quoted as saying, that they hope the stadium will “host major international events and maybe the Commonwealth Games.”
The World Cup in 2018 would be one of these major events although it is unclear whether the F.A would choose two stadiums so closely situated with Villa Park due to have an increased capacity by the start of the tournament.
