Nottingham Forest New Stadium for 2018 World Cup

Nottingham Forest is planning to build a new Brian Clough Stadium (name may change but due to Brian Clough’s contribution to the club, it is very probable that Nottingham will name their stadium after this long-serving manager) in a bid for the club to be recognised again as a top club. After having fallen into League One, the twice Champions of Europe are aiming to get promoted back to the Premier League. The stadium they are designing will be a super stadium in Clifton in the east Midlands, with the view of hosting some games of the World Cup 2018. Initially, the stadium will have a capacity of 40000 spectators but it will be increased to 50000 should Nottingham Forest successfully climb from League One to the Premier League. If all these plans come to reality, this new stadium is almost certain to be part of England’s package for hosting the World Cup. The club will have until 2009 to decide and submit the plans, for the new stadium to be considered for the 2018 World Cup.

New Forest Stadium for World Cup Bid?

Proposed Stadium

Most of the funds to build the new stadium will come from outside developers who believe in the potential of this new project which will yield abundant financial rewards and attract businesses to set around the stadium. Local authorities are also willing to provide financial help to this club to implement these ambitious plans. Multi-millionaire Nottingham chairman Nigel Doughty will finance the rest of the project. The club plans to move to its newly-built stadium, with a budgeted cost of £45-£50 million, by 2014. If Nottingham is promoted to the Premier League, as planned by the board, things will be easier for the club to put into action their plans for the stadium, due to the hefty revenue from TV rights earned on promotion.

  2. Tom

Too small for the quaters, definatly in the group stages though

  3. Harry Redman

to small not a good choice will never get built.

  4. Ethan

Not sure, I rekon we could host quarters.

  5. Emko

Defo for group stages at least !

  6. Luke Richardson

No way derby is must better option in transport links and footballing community. Derby is also one of the fastest develpoing city in england and is always improving.

Nottingham did a great job hosting games in Euro 96, the City had a great buzz about it and has a proven track record – let us prove it again!!

Sounds like alot of ‘Ifs’ to be a solid bid.

    If Nottingham builds a stadium
    If it gets planning permission
If it gets into the Premier League
If it is successful expanded to 50,000
If external business stumps up enough money
If the chairman doesn’t get bored.

In a city that already has 2 large football stadiums and no Premier League football teams – why Nottingham? There are much better facilities around the country without starting from scratch building a whole new stadium, infrastructure and transport links in Nottingham.

Nottingham is the capital of the east midlands, and will realy benifit from the new stadium. Transport links are being improved anyway with the new tramlines being built, and Nottingham station being improved. There is already development taking place in the city centre, such as trinity square, and by 2018 the new broadmarsh will be finnished, and will be one of the biggest shopping centres in the country. Plus, with development planned for the east side of Nottingham, and the trent basin project which will redevelop nottinghams waterfront, nottingham will be a world class city by 2018. Plus we can put matches on big screens in: The old Market Square, Victoria Embankment, our “2 large football stadiums” and the 10,000 seater Trent fm arena. Nottinghams bid stands out way above Derby and leicester’s and must host a game in 2018!

Sorry Luke Richardson, but you obviously have never been to Nottingham, or are a Derby County fan who just hats it. Derby is a small town in comparision to Nottingham and the transport links are inferior. NCT is one of the countrys to bus services, and NET has won the light rail operator of the year a few years running. Also Nottingham IS the fastest growing city in Europe.

    I think it is the best idea EVER;
    It will convince people not to be scared of 2012 ( conspiracy people );
and give them futher futural energy.

World Cup in Nottingham? Have you ever been there? It’s dull, dark and miserable. The traffic is already horrendous, there is no service industry to speak of, hosting this enormous event would be a logistical nightmare and who would want to travel to the back end of nowhere to see a spectacle that ought to be played out on a fitting stage… not in some field off a duel carriageway! Absolute madness has taken hold of Nottingham – would it be greed? There’s more to this farce than meets the eye. Wake up!

I am 16 and have lived in several cities in my life such as Derby, Brimingham, Yeovil and Nottingham. Out of the lot I have found Nottingham the best and especially by the river as this is the sport hotspot. As Davie obviously has not had the luxury of living in Nottingham he hasn’t seen it in a true light (like I have). Nottingham is especially good at hosting sporting events such as the ashes, world cup 20/20 this year and has been able to coordinate the playing and fans of the two teams Notts County and Nottingham even though they are only seperated by a river.
Overall I do agree that currently Nottingham would struggle to host the Fifa World Cup. Yet I have no doubts over Nottingahm’s capabilities not only to be able to host the world cup but to make it one of the greatest cities holding the World Cup outside London.

NOTTS FOR WORLD CUP 2018 =D

im a die hard forest fan and i realy dont want a new stadium. the city ground is an amazing place and has a great atmosphere. forest are almost at there 100 year lease and when this ends i think instead of making a new stadium improver the one we have. upgrade it into a bowl. where the bridgfoed end meets the brian clough stand put corners up from mainstand to trent end and trent end to the brain clough stand. there is defenatly roomm for improvemt at the stadium we have. so if there are any officails reading this. upgrade the city ground instead of building a new stadium.

as an ardent fan of Clough and the club, I am more happy to see a fantastic stadium for the club than the city hosting the WC. The club deserves more than many other premiership clubs out there. Would love to see the club commands with authority the premiership with great football as they used to do those days. Long live Nottingham Forest.

The proposed stadium for Forest is in completely the wrong place. The transport links are relatively poor and will only create more development sprawling into the countryside. It is obvious that it should be on the M1 side to benefit the majority. Derby makes more sense generally as a venue but the reality is that the choice of the Forest ground is mainly a sop to the East of England, which has no no presence on the shortlist. Admittedly there are not any stadiums of the correct capacity there currently but if Forest wasn’t an option it must have been felt that Easterners can travel to London, as if that is not congested enough. And why may I ask shouldn’t Cardiff be considered, as they play in the English league, and are part of that structure.

  18. mh

GREAT news for the city. good transport links with NET a NCT, good roads, up and coming city. (derby a leister cant bost that) we have proved we can host big sport evens with the likes of the ashes 20/20, forest a county games, boxing and ice hokey. duno what davie is on about obviously has never been to the city. new stadium on its way BRING IT ON!!
LET THE WORLD COME TO NOTTINGHAM!

  19. Martin

Its conurbation is large, diverse and transportation links throughout are nearly on par with Manchester’s. It’s a very positive city to live in, and always has been. A huge student population gives it the best nightlife in the region, Classy hotels are also ubiquitous now. Thats before I talk about the unique history of Nottingham. Nottingham wants the world cup, the world cup needs Nottingham. Nottingham Forest established in 1865, represent a symbolic link to footballs humble beginnings. CORRECT CHOICE FA

i think if you take out all bitterness and boasting, you all have valid points and all points should be concidered. i have been a forest supporter all my life and i mean ALL my life. although the idea of a new stadium look very nice, i would be saddened to see the city ground disappear and agree with another that improvements to the city ground would be far better, the ground we have already is a pinnicle icon to the city of nottingham and yes the cricket ground and 2 football stadiums in close proximity to each other, and the ice stadium etc etc have hosted a vast amount of high profile events before, nottingham is an up and coming city it has good services and is improving all the time, how-ever i do think transport would be an issue if the ground was moved, and yes the m1 side would be better rather than out in the sticks so to speak, i think this really needs to be thought of a lot more, i love the old stadium and everything about nottingham but some things seems great in hind sight but when you sit back and look and the full picture, ask yourself, as nice as the new stadium looks, if we dont fill it every week to the rafters, how long before expenses send the club bust. after all, its the club that will have to pay for everything when its up and running, ticket prices go up and supporters leave…. and its not like we will be regular condenders for champions league football any time soon.. i think even though it looks nice and sounds great, its a financial nightmare for club and supporters and far more thought needs to go into it, look at other cities that thought it improve things and all its done is left them in financial termoil. council tax payers and supporters will pay heavily for it. keep and improve the old ground i say and improve the city first then think about it, great idea but wrong time :)

  21. Glen

I’ve been a Forest fan ALL my life and i think its a great idea to build a new stadium for NOTTINGHAM and not just Forest! The City Ground has a great history, but thats all it is HISTORY, if you true die hard Forest fans want the greatest team in the world to be playing in the greatest league in the world then we need a stadium to mirror this. The City ground is past its best and redevelopment would not be viable, as with parking an absolute nightmare at the minute on matchdays where the hell would another 20,000 people park ??? Moving to a new stadium outside of the city is the only way forward and i for one cant see how Prideless Park in Derby (sorry little bit of sick came up then) could possibly stage a World Cup when people across the world think that derby is just a Horse Race!!

The people of nottingham and the forest fans need a stadium to show off to the world, and the City Ground doesn’t cut it anymore, im a proud Forest Fan and will cry my eyes out if they shut the City Ground, but if it we get a new stadium that helps us attract better sponsors/players etc, then this is good for both the club and the city!!!

  22. Mat

Excellent, simply great news. We know the decision is a correct one looking at the responses from derby…
