Capello backs England 2018 bid

Present England manager Fabio Capello is giving his full suport to bringing the World Cup to England in 2018. The Italian tactician has re-shaped the way that the English national team plays and will be given the chance to impress in the 2010 World Cup. 62-year old Capello will be 72 by the time the World Cup comes to England, and it remains to be seen if he would still be in management by then. However, the Italian believes that it would do football, as well as the country, heaps of good by being brought back to its home.

The only time that England hosted the competition, in 1966, they came out as winners, despite scoring a somewhat controversial goal. The English League is the best in the world, watched by million of supporters worldwide, extending from USA to the Far East, with strong club fanbases in several countries. The international team had many problems with motivation, whereby players were excellent in club matches but failed to make an impression when wearing the Three Lions shirt. England is competing with 10 other bids, and the main European rival is Russia. All forms must be submitted to FIFA by February 16th 2009, and a decision will be made in December 2010 after evaluating all possibilities.

Fabio Capello’s comments were:

“I think it’s very important [that England host the World Cup]. ”

“Other countries are in competition, but England is a fantastic place for the World Cup, the stadia is okay and the people are fantastic. The football needs to be back in England after a lot of years, and I hope this will be in 2018.”

“It is the place where football was born, so we need another time for the FIFA World Cup. England needs it, football needs to be back home.”

Such comments were echoed by FA Chairman Lord Triesman, who said:

“You must show you are able to stage such a competition and leave a legacy not only in England but across the World.”

“We are going to work hard at it, we are – by no means – the favourites. We have to show we can win it [the bid] on merit.”

“Very often it is the toughest competition that sharpens your game. I welcome this. It is a part of football.”
