Elland Road Potential 2018 Venue
Elland Road, the home of Leeds United, was built in 1897, to be the home of Leeds City. Bankruptcy caused the government to intervene and take possession of the stadium. In 1919 after World War 1 it became home to the newly formed Leeds United.

The ownership of the stadium has provoked much controversy over the years. With the council in control of the ground for most of the twentieth century, businessman Sebastien Sainsbury attempted to buy the club and its stadium. However in 2006, amidst concerns for the future of the club following spiralling debts, it emerged Sainsbury had previously sold the ground to a British Virgin Islands based consortium, Teak Trading Corpoation Ltd.
The stadium itself holds a maximum capacity of 40,242 and the most famous stand is the Don Revie Stand, holdind 7,000 seats. It is the largest English stadium outside the Premier League, 11th in total.
Elland Road has seen many great names throughout the years, including John Giles, Eric Cantona, Ian Rush, Billy Bremner (all players) and Brian Clough(manager) .
If Leeds are seen as suitable city hosts for the 2018 World Cup, Elland Road is the only viabe venue in the city.

Leeds fans are superb, but their ground needs upgrading for the 21st century.
Suggest also a little trainline is necessary – a 4 minute commute from the main station? Getting there by public transport is not good……
Leeds is a well transported city and can cover the amount of fans who will be coming to England. Elland road is near the city which means easy transport from the airport and hotels. It has a great night life which fans would celebrate in!! vote for leeds
Leeds has to be considered as a strong contender for a world cup host city. It is the 4th biggest city in the UK and Elland Road has a relatively strong record in holding events such as the World Cup. Regarding the stadium itself: I have no idea what Rhys is talking about- Elland Road is in great condition.
I’ve read elsewhere on this website that Liverpool and Manchester should have two stadiums each! What nonsense. Leeds is bigger than Liverpool and would be a draw for people all over Yorkshire. Leeds Utd may be in League 1…but the city is premier class.
bring it to bradford instead a much better city and alot more modern stadium
i think it wouldnt be a world cup without having elland road in it. its already hosting some rugby world cup games so its already been proven its good enough. also its 42,000 and if we were accepted then i heard we could improve capacity to 50,000. it would also help leeds utd its self because if we got it then the stadium could be refurbished and by that time we will be back were we belong…. the Premiership!
choose leeds!
Lol..no offence Adam, but Bradford?!? Are you serious? Leeds all the way!
wow first female to post something!
Leeds should definatly host the 2018 World Cup because like it says further up the page, the stadium has seen many great names and i think it deserves to see many more. David Beckham, Wayne Rooney etc etc. And i don’t see why the stadium needs to be modern, if it has a pitch to play on and plenty of seats – whats the problem!? Its also a great city with lots to do when your not watching football: great bars and pubs, shopping in the centre. Leeds is perfection. You know it. I know it.
I agree with adam, elland road is a bigger stadium but bradford is more modern im not to botherd but i would like atleast one to be in yorkshire or even in the north ide hate for the hole world cup to be down south.
Fantastic stadium and a fantastic atmosphere. It’s location provides space for any future development. Apart from being about 25 mins walk from the nearest train station, the bus service is second to none and parking is ample. Unlike Manchester, Liverpool and London, Elland road is the only large stadium in the area. The security system within the stadium is reportedly the most advanced in Europe. All this coupled with the recent City centre developments make it an ideal international venue.
Bring it to leeds ! i would hate it to be in sheffield! i have heard they have to pick at least one from yorkshire it has to be leeds because we are the pride of yorkshire ! MOT !!!!!!!
I remember a time when football was about the atmosphere, the green grass and the chubby lady with the tight fitted away shirt. Those days will always be a distant memory to those who haven’t seen them for several years. How can Leeds not be remembered for the great crash or the way we handled the thing. Above all, lets not forget the big field of dreams. I think you know what I’m talking about. Bradford is full of one thing and it isn’t too nice.
Bradford city ground my be modern but too small to hold any world cup games.
If England win the bid to hold the wold cup Leeds would be one of the places Great Ground which will be upgraded .http://www.leedsunited.com/news/artists-impressions-elland-road-for-the-world-cup-20091201_2247585_1891857
Close to motorway good public transport and of course there Leeds training ground at thorp arch which is one of the best in the country
For sheffield since the disaster at hilborugh i carnt ever see the world cup going there
Bring it to leeds ! 50,000 seater stadium and the fans to full it. NEXT Question Please
Rhys, I hate to be the one to break this to you but trains are public transport. Never mind, nice try though. Your Mum will be well proud!
