Emirates Stadium: World Cup Venue 2018

Emirates Stadium 2018 World Cup

Arsenal’s new Emirates stadium may well be used for some World Cup matches if the competition comes to England. Formerly known as Ashburton Grove (the location of the stadium), it was renamed Emirates Stadium after a £100 million deal was struck with airline giants Emirates, and opened in July 2006. Its capacity is 60355 making it the second-largest football stadium in England after Old Trafford. This project cost Arsenal £430 million.

2018 Semi Final Venue?

The supporter stands have four levels, all being covered with a roof. However, unlike stadiums like the Wembley, the pitch itself is not covered. The pitch is 105 metres by 68 metres in size. Due to the brand name Emirates, there may be problems regarding the official name of the ground used for the World Cup, unless Emirates sponsor the 2018 event. Such occurrence has happened in the Champions League where this stadium is referred to as the Arsenal Stadium.

The first match that was played at the Emirates stadium was Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial against his former club Ajax on the 22nd July 2006, with the first competitive match being a Premier League game played against Aston Villa on the 19th August 2006. Although Arsenal is not one of the main player contributors to the English squad, their stadium might come very useful for the FA when deciding the venues for the World Cup. It has high standards of quality and security, which make it impossible to be overlooked if the 2018 event returns to England…the place where football was born.

It should only be used for a quarter final (and group games)

  2. Adam

Why only a 1/4 final? Have you ever been, this stadium is regarded by many as the best stadium in Britain! Every seat is padded, more leg room than wembley, best quality pitch in the world… need i go on? Semi Final venue definately depending on other stadium developments.

  3. Liam

Yeah, but it only holds 60,000. Wembley and OT hold more and there are only two semi final games.

  4. Matty

I am not an Arsenal supporter but this is by far one of the best stadiums in britain. I mean have you actully been there and seen it with your own eyes, it actually blew me away to see how beaut it really is! Definetly should be included in 2018 and why not be host semi-final ?

  5. kieran

this stadium should hostcthe final it is top class

  6. Kevin

I think it should hold a semi-final, with Wembley NOT hosting one but instead just hold the Final. And yes I have been to this stadium.

  7. Charles

This stadium is amazing and is of the finest quality with comfortable seating and one of the best pitches in England. It is centrally located in North London meaning that it not only is an amazing stadium but it is one of the easiest to get to from around the world. It should definitely be a quarter-finals stadium and probably as a semi-finals one as well.

  8. Michel

Geographical location will mean Wembley and an northern stadium will host semis but it is definitely worthy of a quarter-final, maybe 3rd place play-off. It would be a travesty not to use it. It is has excellent transport links and in trendy Islington. Tottenham’s new ground will be spectacular no doubt, but the area is a dump and too far up north london. I can’t see Chelsea building a mega stadium now not with Abramovich losing billions on the stock market.

  9. Gav

Slight problem with this article. It says the pitch is not covered unlike stadiums like Wembley. Well, there are no covered stadiums in England. Contrary to some peoples belief, Wembley does not have a retractable roof, as anyone who saw the Dolphins vs Giants game a couple of years ago will tell you.

  10. Dave

Old Trafford and Wembley should be semi-final venues. Why should Southerners have all the fun? Emirates should certainly be used though: definite 1/4 final stadium.

  11. Sam

Haveing lots of great stadiums in this country is a wonderful thing, if and when we get a major international tournament we should spread all games throughout the country, a semi in the south(emirates) and one in the north(old trafford) so tourists can see more of our great country. Wembley should only be used for the final, London is the capital, and tourists will want to come here.

  12. Jack

    It should be as follows:
    Quaters:

    Anfield
    St. James Park
    Stamford Bridge
    Stadium of Light

    Semis:

    Emirates Stadium
    Old Trafford

    Finals:

    Wembley Stadium

All sorted!! oh and im a gunner BTW and wembley does have a retractable roof at one end.

  13. Max

Im a chelsea fan myself but I think The Emirates Stadium (LONDON) and Old Trafford (MANCHESTER) should be osting the semi finals. Otherwise Its Unfair On Fans And countruuies as they may thnik that England are favouring one of the countries having Wembley as a semi final stadium and Old Trafford means two countires get to go to grand and posh ol Wembley while the other gets to go to scummy Manchester. Yay ?

World cups generally dont use the semi finals venue for a final. (germany 2006, and Japan/South Korea 2002 as a reference. To use wembley as a semi final venue would surely undermine actually reaching the final? Personally, i dont think Wembley should be used until the final as it is the flagship stadium for the bid. My Semi Final Venues would be Ashburton Grove (arsenal fans dont generally refer to it by its corporate name) and Old Trafford. With Quarter Finals possibly being Elland Road, Depending on refurbishment. Villa Park, New/Old Anfield and finally St James Park.

Having been to the emirates stadium regularly, i regard it as one of the finest stadiums in the world. It has not only fantastic padded seats and leg room but also an unbeatable world class pitch that is maintained by england’s finest groundsmen (something that wembley lacks a little). The location is easilly accessable from central london and the security is top notch, and it has proven that it can hold international football with the successful Brazil vs Italy and Brazil vs Argentina games. This staduim should definatly be a semi final venue alongside a northen venue such as the massive old trafford or the noisy and energetic St.james park, a.k.a the sportsdirect@stjamespark.com stadium ;)

  17. Alex

I’m an arsenal fan and have been to this stadium on 5 occasions. It is an amazing stadium and who cares if it cant hold as much as old trafford or Wembly. I have been to wembly and it may hold more but it is so basic and ugly. It wont happen but the emirates should get the final really, its the best in england and an amazing arena for football.

  18. saf

all honest, Emirates and old Trafford are the only stadiums that should be used for semi- final venue’s

    with wembley being the final……

  19. matt

I am a derby fan and i feel emirates stadium is by fat the best the country

  20. Arsenal’s fan

of course you know it’s better than old trafford ( technology ) and it’s more beautiful.

    1. Emirates stadium
    2. old trafford

  21. Joe

Emirates Stadium should part of The World Cup, execllent pitch smooth, great technology, good condition, showers are nice so yeah it should be the

    1/4

New White Hart Lane or Stadium Of Light
    St James Park
    Villa Park
    City Of Manchester

    1/2

    Emirates Stadium
    Old Trafford

    Third Place
    Elland Road

    Final

    Wembley

  22. Bob

    Final: Wembley
    Semi-Finals: Emirates & Old Trafford

Emirates Stadium is fantastic I have been 4 times, the seats are very nice, there is plenty of legroom, and almost all the seats (except for up in the gods) have a very good view of the pitch, which is by far the best pitch in England. It has great transport links and is brand new, how could we not use it? It would be like building the Olympic Stadium then not using it in 2012.

  23. aby

definetly emirates should host atleast a semi final….its beautiful n worth hosting any match….

  24. wanya

it is a sick stadium beacause at the top you can touch the ceiling and you can see outside the stadium
