Emirates Stadium: World Cup Venue 2018

Emirates Stadium 2018 World Cup

Arsenal’s new Emirates stadium may well be used for some World Cup matches if the competition comes to England. Formerly known as Ashburton Grove (the location of the stadium), it was renamed Emirates Stadium after a £100 million deal was struck with airline giants Emirates, and opened in July 2006. Its capacity is 60355 making it the second-largest football stadium in England after Old Trafford. This project cost Arsenal £430 million.

2018 Semi Final Venue?

The supporter stands have four levels, all being covered with a roof. However, unlike stadiums like the Wembley, the pitch itself is not covered. The pitch is 105 metres by 68 metres in size. Due to the brand name Emirates, there may be problems regarding the official name of the ground used for the World Cup, unless Emirates sponsor the 2018 event. Such occurrence has happened in the Champions League where this stadium is referred to as the Arsenal Stadium.

The first match that was played at the Emirates stadium was Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial against his former club Ajax on the 22nd July 2006, with the first competitive match being a Premier League game played against Aston Villa on the 19th August 2006. Although Arsenal is not one of the main player contributors to the English squad, their stadium might come very useful for the FA when deciding the venues for the World Cup. It has high standards of quality and security, which make it impossible to be overlooked if the 2018 event returns to England…the place where football was born.

It should only be used for a quarter final (and group games)

Why only a 1/4 final? Have you ever been, this stadium is regarded by many as the best stadium in Britain! Every seat is padded, more leg room than wembley, best quality pitch in the world… need i go on? Semi Final venue definately depending on other stadium developments.
