There is a rumour that Greece are willing to bid to host the 2018 World Cup. Should this bid materialise, it is very unlikely to be successful. This is partly due to the fact that stadiums in Greece are not suitable for World Cup games. There are few stadiums that exceed 30000 seats in Greece. The only stadium that is perhaps suitable is the Olympic Stadium.

However, to say the truth, Greece is a very unlikely candidate for the World Cup. Even though it won the European Championship 2004 and hosted the Olympics successfully in the same year, a bid from this country on its own won’t be backed by UEFA or accepted by FIFA. There were suggestions that Greece should seek to join forces with Turkey to have a more attractive bid.

The Greek authorities would rather prepare a bid to host the European Championship rather than a World Cup and the hosting of the 2018 World Cup will probably be fought by larger countries that have the best facilities and stadiums.
