Host city success could generate Sheffield £300m
Sheffield could make £300 million as a host city if they are chosen by England for their 2018 World Cup bid. This is according to Professer Chris Grattan who teaches at Sheffield Hallam University.
Grattan, who was speaking at a Sheffield seminar, called for local businesses to throw their weight behind Sheffield’s bid campaign.
He mentioned that during the 2006 tournament, Germany received 40 million euro from foreign visitors alone per match. However, it was made clear that the economic impact could be diluted depending on what matches the city would receive to host.
World Cup winning England goalie Gordon Banks also told seminar delegates that Sheffield deserved to be a host city if England wins the rights to the 2018 tournament because it is a football-loving city that has produced wonderful players.
