Hull loses out on World Cup place

Hull’s bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup, should England win the rights to stage it, have been rejected along with two other cities.

Fellow Yorkshire rivals Leeds and Sheffield were both named amongst the 12 successful cities but Hull were not included despite already having a ground in place to stage matches.

New Hull chairman Adam Pearson, whose former club Derby also missed out on being named a host city, said: “We sat here with very high hopes and I think the work that has gone into the bid was excellent. Staging a World Cup match could have played an important part in the regeneration of the city. I think the learning process will stand the city in good stead going forward. We tried to prove that we had put on international events of high calibre at this venue before, but in the end they decided to go to rather more unproven venues such as Bristol and Plymouth which is a surprise. We wish them well and we move on.”

Pearson - dissapointed!

Lord Mawhinney, England 2018 deputy chairman, said: “England’s fortunate to have so many good stadia and I would like to congratulate all of the applicant host cities for the seven months of really hard work they have put in. We have chosen cities which present the lowest possible risk to Fifa and it’s Fifa who will make the final decision. There will also be a lot of disappointed football fans around the country, I understand that, and if I was a fan of theirs I would be just as disappointed.”

The other successful cities will find out if England has won the rights to hosting the tournament in December 2010.

It’s just typical of people who don’t know Hull to have negative views of the City. I thought the whole idea of being a host city was re-generation as much as actually hosting a few world cup matches. Lord Mewhinney at the end of the day is a Bristol City supporter, hence that’s why they got chosen. As for Plymouth, well that’s a geographical choice. But Milton keynes or should i say Wimbledon in disguise, what football history does this city have?? What a fix!!

    Tony Chapman I agree.

It is disappointing that we have a great Modern, ready built stadium here. Yet we have lost out. I think Hull needs this regeneration more then ever at the moment due to the unfair, and untrue bad publicity this city has had over the past few years.

It’s a shame, that once again, Hull has been shunted!
