Leicester launch 2018 host city bid
Leicester has expressed their interest in becoming a host city for the 2018 World Cup if England are successful with their proposed bis.
Former Premiership star Muzzy Izzet, who reached the semi finals of the 2002 World Cup with Turkey, has joined council officials as Leicester become one of fifteen cities expressing an interest in the bidding process.
Izzet said: “When I was at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea, it was like a carnival. Everywhere you went, it was there. The atmosphere was incredible. It would be very positive for the city to have that, there would be so many people visiting.”
Cllr Ross Willmott, City council leader, said: “Hosting the World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our country – and if England wins the right to stage the 2018 World Cup, we want to do everything we can to make sure Leicester’s involved.”

A World Cup match at The Walkers Stadium in Leicester would be perfect – the stadium is ideal, the City has great links to many forms of public transport, the City centre has several areas conducive to providing public areas for watching matches on giant TV screens (eg Town Hall Square), it would be a fantastic economic boost for the area and the City is surrounding by some of the most beautiful British countryside to visit/stay – providing a tourism boost for rural areas.
And finally, it’s an unrivalled accolade for all football fans.
Don’t let Leicester be overlooked because nobody knows where it is or what’s here.
I agree with the comments. Leicester would be a great host City.
Nottingham would be better in my own opinion
I feel Nottingham has more to offer than Leicester.
Their bid has more about it with the new stadium and better fan parks.
