Leicester to pay £15 million for World Cup

Leicester City Council has revealed that becoming one of the twelve host cities for the 2018 World Cup could cost up to £15 million.

However the city, who are looking to host up to four matches at the Walkers Stadium, could make £90 million if they are chosen by the England bid team.

The £15 million would be spent on meeting FIFA requirements for being a host city alongside decorating Leicester and creating fanfest sites. Nevertheless, City Council leader Ross Willmott has stated that the money would only be needed if England won their bid to stage the tournament in 2018.

Willmott said: “I believe we can raise that kind of money, we have done it before for projects. Because of the tremendous benefit the £90m will give, it is an investment worth trying to secure. What we do over the next few years is like a savings fund and if we put our under-spends into that every year, by the time we got to 2018 I’m pretty confident that we would have the money that we need.”
