Liverpool may miss out on 2018 host city bid
Despite boasting two of the largest Premier League clubs in the country, Liverpool are in big danger of not becoming one of England’s host city’s for the 2018 World Cup.
The Merseyside campaign, to be submitted by November 26th, will include Anfield along with the two new stadiums being planned in Stanley Park for Liverpool and Kirkby for Everton.

However, Anfield is an ageing stadium and with Liverpool FC’s current financial issues, it is uncertain as to whether club owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks will follow through to deliver the stadium on time, especially since it’s already a year behind schedule.
Everton’s proposed new stadium in Kirkby has also undergone problems. The club are awaiting a government decision following complaints about the project. Bizarrely, the decision will be made a day after the host city bids have to be submitted. To make matters even more confusing, Liverpool City Council, who organised the city’s bid, are one of the major opponents to the new stadium at Kirkby.

I suspect, looking from the outside in, that tribal battles are going on instead of realising that BOTH of the city’s clubs will slide down the pecking order if they don’t put aside their differences for the good of the city. Either they BOTH embrace TWO new stadiums, or they share one and benefit from NWDA money. But it won’t do to have one club sold down the swanee and that’s beyond dispute.
If that is indeed the case, then the city doesn’t deserve to participate.
Because they’d be like squabbling little children in the playground.
Children need to be supervised. They don’t invite the world to dinner.
That’s what their parents do.
Think about it…..
How is Anfield ageing exactly? It’s one of the most updated stadiums in the league and already has the required capacity for the WC. Liverpool’s situation is no different to the rest of the applicants who are putting forward potential new stadia as part of their bid.

ha
It’s old, tatty, horrible and nobody would prefere it to places like Villa Park, or The Stadium of Light.
Give it to nicer cities!
Sad bitter person. Have you not got anything better to do?
Bless.
hopefully Bristol will get, we have a new 44k Stadium that has all but passed planning for Bristol City, Bristol as a City is a fantastic place to live (voted the best City in the country apparently), and even the weather is great!
I very much doubt that a city the size of Liverpool could host two World Cup venues. And the same applies to Sheffield and especially Manchester – look how they coped with Rangers fans..
It seems to me that Liverpools bid is doomed as they don’t have the stadia to host World Cup games and have no prospect of getting them.
Nottingham and Plymouth are in the same boat, but Bristol has had their stadium approved and building will start in the new year, and all the others have the capacity to upgrade their already modern stadia.
I think (and hope) that each successful city, apart from London, will have just one stadium for hosting. That means a bigger geographical spread for the population to see live world cup football.
But I fear that Liverpool won’t be a host city.
