Nottingham vision for 2018 revealed
Full details of Nottingham’s plans to help secure host city status for the 2018 World Cup have been revealed.
A group including Nottingham Forest, the city council and landowners will submit a proposal to Rushcliffe Borough Council this week for land east of Gamston.
The proposal will include:
- The development of 4,500 homes, two primary schools, a secondary school and a district shopping centre.
- A £100m stadium with capacity for 45,000 fans which would be the main feature of Nottingham’s World Cup bid.
- Three country parks and community sports facilities.

A modern stadium is seen as a fundamental requirement for Nottingham to become a World Cup host city. However, the Government has told Rushcliffe Borough Council it must find room for thousands more houses in the next 20 years.
Mark Arthur, chief executive of Nottingham Forest, said: “If the tournament goes to Leicester or Derby, Nottingham’s position as the capital of the East Midlands will be eroded.”

read between the lines and this is just a cynical ploy to concrete over greenbelt land and justify housing developments. This is a real wasted opportunity for redevelopment and revitalisation of Nottingham city, there is so much waste ground between the city centre and river Trent that could be utilised instead.
