Plymouth enter race to become World Cup host

Plymouth have become the 16th city to submit an application to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup if England are successful with their campaign.

The bid consortium will be led by Plymouth Argyle FC and will incorporate a number of regional supporters including Plymouth City Council. However, as a late entry, they will be starting some way behind the other cities but still have hope of being one of the successful cities announced in December.

Douglas Fletcher, consortium chairman, said: “Being a host city in 2018 would be an enormous honour for the people of Plymouth, and a hugely positive experience for football fans in the South West. Having joined the process late we have to be seen as underdogs, but we’re determined to put a bid the region can be proud of.”

I think plyouth should be able to host for england because devon and cornwall do not get enough attention when it comes to world-wide sports. I for plymouth to have this oppertunity would be great for the city and the team

Fantastic news for the South West, we seem to always be forgotten when it comes to big events on the football calender, fans in this part of the world probably do more travelling to watch internationals and domestic games then any other fans so hopefully Plymouth’s bid will get the backing to bring this massive event to Plymouth.

If this were possible this would be potentially great. We all know that Devon and Cornwall have huge tourist accommodation capacity and are well used to welcoming outsiders for pleasurable short stays.

With an airport at Exeter and high-speed trains to London, this sounds a most interesting addition to the candidates list.

Whether a ground of 40,000 would benefit the South West is perhaps a key question.

Plymouth would be an excellent venue set in beautiful parkland within the City. Central park is 20 mins walk from the City centre and 30 mins walk from Plymouth’s Historic Hoe. Where would you want to be on a Summer’s day? Plymouth has it all, Bring it on!

Plymouth needs this. We have always been overlooked when it comes to Football. We have the potential, the belief and the perfect location.

Plymouth is a perfect world cup host city. Visitors can combine watching their team with holidaying in one of most naturally beautiful regions in the world.

The people of devon and cornwall are warm and friendly and would welcome the football supporters from other countries for this event as they do year in year out with the millions of holidaymakers that make their way to the south west.

Central Park adjacent to PAFC’s ground is a perfect venue for a world cup village with big screens and other entertainment.

    Excellent idea!

Plymouth’s inclusion will really put Devon and Cornwall on the international map as a first class destination with a history of hospitality and vibrance!
