Russia’s possible bid for World Cup 2018

The World Cup of 2018 can be hosted by countries from all continents, except Africa (which will host the World Cup 2010 through South Africa) and South America (Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup) which are ineligible as they would have organised the past two World Cups.

Russian 2018 World Cup Bid

One of the two most-powerful bids coming from Europe is the Russian bid. Not only have Russia eliminated England from the European Championship 2008, but they also look like they are ready to battle England to host the World Cup 2018.

Russia’s 2018 Bid

Stadiums are not a problem in this mega-country. Russia will be hosting the Champions League Final 2008 in the Luzhniki, one of the stadiums that would surely host games from the World Cup and maybe also the final. The bid from Russia will surely be backed by Russian billionaire and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who would do anything to bring the World Cup to his country.

Two major disadvantages of the World Cup being staged in Russia are the long distances that need to be travelled by the fans and also the severely cold temperatures that hit Russia. Russian representatives will be very busy masterminding the best possible package to propose to FIFA. It will be interesting to see if this country will succeed in defeating England in the battle to host the 2018 tournament.
