Stadium to be built on Heysel site if Holland/Belgium successful

The stadium currently on the site of the 1985 Heysel disaster will be rebuilt yet again if Holland and Belgium are successful with their bid for the 2018 World Cup.

The original Heysel stadium was knocked down ten years after the events of 1985 where 39 Juventus fans lost their life after crowd violence before the 1985 European Cup Final against Liverpool. The King Baudouin stadium was built on site and became the Belgium national stadium until 2006.

The stadium has been put on the shortlist for the Holland/Belgium proposal to be submitted to FIFA in December 2010. However, if the bid is unsuccessful a modest new national stadium will be built beyond Brussels at Schaerbeek-Formation.

A spokesman for the Brussels Mayor said: “We are very enthusiastic supporters of the 2018 bid. So, although Schaerbeek-Formation is the site which makes most sense for the city, time would be against us for 2018. Instead, if the bid is successful, we would be very pleased to bring the Stade Roi Baudouin up to FIFA standards instead.”

The Holland/Belgium joint bid is not currently one of the favourites to win hosting rights. FIFA President Sepp Blatter is not keen on a joint bid and is edging towards the Spain/Portugal proposal if any joint campaign is going to be considered.
