Will the 2018 World Cup be in Europe?

The tournament will most likely be in Europe, FIFA have a policy of continental rotation which will last until “at least 2014”, this was agreed after the controversial award of the 2006 Finals to Germany.

Before 1998 the Americas and Europe had alternated hosting the tournaments, but since there it has been awarded to Asia (Japan & South Korea in 2002) and Africa (South Africa 2010) and will be in South America in 2014 (most likely Brazil)

Oceania is the only populated continent that has yet to host a World Cup, but if the 2018 tournament were to go to Australia or even to Canada, then the 16-year gap between 2006 and 2022 would be the longest between tournaments in Europe.

Currently there is interest from Australia, Mexico, Canada and the Benelux countries, who could submit a joint bid. Read more on other countries 2018 bids here.
