Yorkshire representatives present their host city plans

Teams from Sheffield, Hull and Leeds have travelled to Wembley to present their proposals that will hopefully see them granted as a host city for England’s 2018 World Cup bid.

The three campaigns are looking to take on 12 other bids with only a limited number chosen by the 2018 bid team. However, Lord Mawhinney has boosted the candidates from Yorkshire by claiming that more than one of the three bids could be successful.

He said: “Everybody will be treated fairly and rigorously. We’ve already published the Fifa criteria against which we’ll make the judgments. If they’re here, they’re here because they’ve prepared a compliant bid and the ones that succeed will be because in our judgment they’ve emerged as the best and there are no restrictions or imperils other than that.”

One area of uncertainty are the bid cities that include more than one proposed stadium. Sheffield’s campaign contains both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough with officials leaving it to the bid team to decide if they want to include both. Sheffield council leader, Paul Scriven, said: “If the World Cup comes to Sheffield people will feel at home. We’ll welcome them, and this is where the rules of football were written.”

Leeds legend Peter Lorimer was on hand to back his city’s bid which would include hosting matches at a redeveloped Elland Road. He said: “I don’t think for one minute there will be just one stadium in Yorkshire selected,” he said. “It’s a big area and I’m sure there’s room for more than one. I wish all the others well, but if there is only one of course I hope it’s Leeds.”

Hull, whose team yesterday include Hull City captain Ian Ashbee and chairman Adam Pearson, claims its bid would leave the city a great legacy and help the drive for regeneration. England Women’s under-15s player, Evie Robinson, 15, also attended. She said: ”I think it’s a great opportunity to get Hull on the map. We’ve never seen anything like this in Hull before.”
